“Prime-Time Middle East!” : UAE and KSA ecommerce research unveiled.

Amazon bought Souq.com in 2017, signaling their entry into the Middle East region. Amazon’s advertising offering commenced early 2020.

Since then the global retail juggernaut has been quietly and carefully building  infrastructure in the region; honing their consumer offering, broadening their product selection and is starting to attract big brands.

To shed light and gain insight into UAE and KSA online shoppers and their behavior, Podean has launched the first wave of thorough and wide-ranging local research. We interviewed 1000 consumers in each country for over half an hour to glean significant insight and data.

Dubai, UAE: 29th September, 2020

Some UAE highlights include:
• 69% of those interviewed have shopped online.
• Amazon.ae is the most popular online retailer by far – with 43.6% of shoppers buying from Amazon recently. The next ranked was Noon with only 16.9% of shoppers buying from them recently.
• 40% of shoppers say they’ll spend at least 25% more on Amazon.ae next year. 13% of respondents expect their Amazon spend to double or more.
• 64% of shoppers spend more than 100 AED each time they shop online.
• 26% of people shop online every week.
• AUAE shoppers love Amazon Prime – especially the fast and free shipping and free international delivery.
• Electronics purchases top the list, and slightly ahead of groceries.
• Amazon Echo dominates the smart speaker category with 12.9% owning an Echo and 8.7% stating they’ll buy one soon. Ownership is 30% higher than that of Google Home.
• 23.4% have watched Twitch.

Saudi Arabia: 20th October, 2020

Some KSA highlights include:
• 95% of those interviewed have shopped online.
• Amazon.sa is the most popular online retailer with 64% of shoppers regularly shopping there, however noon is a close second with 59.7% and Jarir at 45%
• 58% of shoppers say they’ll spend at least 25% more on Amazon.sa next year.
• 50% of shoppers spend more than SAR 250 each time they shop online.
• 50% of people shop online at least every week with 11% shopping daily and 24% shopping 2-3 times per week
• KSA shop online to get the best prices, fast delivery and a broad range
• Electronics purchases top the list, and slightly ahead of clothing and beauty
• Ownership of smart speakers is among the highest in the world at a reported 73% who already own or are looking to purchase. The category is led slightly by Google Home yet more purchase intenders nominate Amazon Echo
• A staggering 70% have watched Twitch with 20% claiming to watch it daily and a further 20% saying they watch it at least weekly
