In the ever-evolving landscape of retail giants, Amazon, Walmart, and Target stand towering above the rest, each commanding a substantial share of the market and redefining the dynamics of modern commerce. In Podean’s latest marketplace research, polling 600 diverse individuals across the U.S., these three marketplaces consistently were preferred over their competitors.

Amazon and Walmart are the top 2 choices in almost every category, and are often just a few small percentage points away from each other. Podean’s team encourages having a consistent presence across all major marketplaces to ensure that your products continue to be seen by shoppers, no matter the site they are visiting.

Shopping Frequency & Retailer Choice

Online shopping continues to become more integrated in our daily lives, propelled by rapid delivery, the influence of social media, and the integration of compelling media campaigns online and out of home. 79% of respondents indicated they shop from at least one of their preferred marketplaces every week.

Shoppers have no shortage of marketplaces to choose from, but a few main factors stand out in guiding them to their final purchase destinations – the top being best prices and fast, free shipping options.

Amazon’s free, 2-day Prime Delivery may be a contributing factor to it being the top choice for weekly shopping – 58% percent say they shop from Amazon once a week, 15% stating they shop the site daily. Even without Prime benefits, Walmart trails close behind at 52.8% shopping weekly, 12.5% daily.

Podean’s polling has found that shoppers aren’t usually marketplace loyal, further driving the need to have a presence across all major marketplaces – 69% of shoppers check multiple marketplaces before purchasing.

Preferred Marketplaces by Category

Shoppers often gravitate towards certain sites for particular categories, often not purchasing, for instance, grocery products from the same place they’d buy clothing.

Amazon leads the way in clothing and apparel purchases, with 56.8% of respondents saying Amazon is their first shopping choice for the category.

Amazon was found to lead the charge in many other categories like personal care and home & garden, but Walmart excels above and beyond in one category – food and beverage. Despite Amazon’s efforts to enter the grocery market through acquisitions like Whole Foods, the launch of Amazon Fresh, and online grocery delivery options from local retailers, Walmart maintains its lead with respondents naming it as their primary destination for groceries.

None of the respondents shop from solely one site – 18% shop from 2-4 marketplaces, while 82% shop 5 or more. This further solidifies the need to have a robust presence across all major marketplaces, ensuring your brand isn’t missed when a consumer is shopping multiple sites.

Podean boasts a strong team of marketplace and media experts, poised to help you grow your presence beyond Amazon alone. By developing a strategy with their team, they can ensure your products are seen across sites, growing your overall marketplace footprint.
